Sponsored Bicyle Ride & Walk

The 2008 bicycle ride and walk marked the 25th Anniversary of the event in Norfolk. It received much publicity and was intended to be a milestone event in the history of the Trust’s fund raising history. During the year a lunch was given for the area coordinators who play such an important part in the success of the occasion. It is they who distribute the 5000+ sponsorship forms, posters and all the other material to the parishes in their area to facilitate all who wish to take part.

Our plans were well laid and everyone was in high hopes that the ‘ride’ in this special year would be the best ever as far as participants and income were concerned. Of course what we didn’t know was that just a few weeks before the appointed day we would all become aware of the global economic downturn and the effect that might have on our annual fund raising event. There was concern and speculation as to the level of success we might achieve especially as reports were beginning to show how personal income and expenditure was being affected.

I am delighted to report that we need not have lost sleep nor have doubted the ability and generosity of the people who support this event. On the day itself the reports on numbers taking part varied considerably. Some reported lower numbers to churches, others reported increased numbers, but all reported on the very good mood amongst the riders, walkers and church sitters. We were not to be deterred!

You may recall in 2007 just over £138,500 was raised and I had expressed the hope that in our 25th year we might break the £150,000 barrier. On the morning of the ride I was thinking that such a level of income was probably not now achievable. As the day progressed I tried to follow developments around the county and felt perhaps things were not as downbeat as I thought they might be.

By the end of the day it was clear that despite all the foreboding, this had been a good day for the bicycle ride, a good day for the Trust, and a very good day for all who had taken part.

The enthusiasm shown by so many people, not only riders and walkers, but also those who sat at churches throughout the day to welcome and provide refreshment to those who visited, really made this a memorable occasion.

Many old friendships were renewed and many new friendships were made. It was a splendid team effort and the perfect way to meet people and to enjoy each other’s company with little in the way of carbon footprints.

All that meant that 2008 saw the amount raised by the ride really hold up albeit the £150,000 target was not achieved. Roy Grage, who along with his family deal with the book keeping and accounting side of the ride with speed, professionalism and total dedication, was able to report around £135,300 as the final figure for the year, just £200 down on 2007 – ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!

Thank you all no matter what part you played, great or not as great, your effort and support made this a joyful occasion and a financial success.

All that remains now is for us all to repeat those efforts on Saturday 12th September this year. The demands on the Trust’s income continue to grow and it is good to know that this event plays a great part in providing the means by which so many churches in Norfolk benefit from the grants we are able to make. That process simply would not be possible without the income from the bicycle ride and our other fund raising events which receive much in the way of effort and support from so many.

So again, thank you to all who ‘did’ and ‘do’ and ‘will do’ again this year. Please continue your support for this event. It really is a lifeline to all who are responsible for the upkeep and repair of our many fine church buildings.

If you would like to participate and obtain sponsorship for the 2010 event, please let us know immediately and we will send you a sponsorship form in good time.  Telephone 01603 767576 and speak to Malcolm Fisher or leave a message if no reply.  Alternatively, send an Email to secretary@norfolkchurchestrust.org.uk with your request.
